I am not so sure but I my son is planning to take an engineering course that will make him specialized in audio and sound production. That seems odd to me. I am an engineer. My wife is a doctor. How come my only son didn’t show any interest towards engineering and medicine? My wife and I would be the happiest persons on earth if we will see how our son will step up and continue what we have started. Whenever I watch movies, I always think about how they are able to put up such masterpieces especially nowadays when you can’t even differentiate real action from computer graphics. However, because I had to work at an early age as life wasn’t that easy for us, I wasn’t able to pursue my dream. It’s really expensive for someone like me. Not only that, the time required for full time courses was not in my book. Having a huge age gap between me and my kids (actually they are already teenagers) has always been tough on me. I find that, no matter how hard I try, I just can’t relate to them in the way I want to. I wish to become their friend and someone they can feel comfortable and let loose with. I wanted to be let into their worlds and to share the same interests that they have without looking or sounding like a trying hard loser. The last thing I want to happen is to embarrass my teens. This would only lead them to move further away from me – more than they already have. The solution that I found was so simple, I couldn’t bring myself to accept the fact that I didn’t think of it before a friend of mine made the suggestion. I started by subscribing to music news on the internet and getting the latest info on what’s going on in the industry and among the artists that my children regularly listen to. Once I got comfortable and felt confident enough to share my newfound hobby and interest with my kids, I started showing them how much I enjoy the songs that they listen to and I even recommended some new tracks they might not have heard yet. They were so surprised that they didn’t know how to react the first time I did it. I think that was my ticket towards becoming closer to them as their mom, without trying hard to be their friend.

I really thought that was mean because I was left with no choice at all. Yet as days went by, I was actually beginning to love my learning experience because I have made really cool friends. In studying film making, I know that there are a lot of things that I should develop such as keenness to minor details, sensitivity to the perspective of viewers, skills in handling equipment, talent in creating stories, sensitivity to sounds, and many others. When talking about the equipment, it is important that I know how to use the most common tools and also the most technological ones. I need to be flexible in using the different equipments available during these days so that I can handle the job I will be hired for whether it is in a big or small film company. In order to learn how to operate software and equipment needed in film making, I must take classes from film schools. Through film program reviews, I will be able to find the name of film schools which have the most technological equipment. However, this is not my only concern. The school should also practice effective teaching strategies. They must offer conventional classroom learning settings or one-on-one tutorial. I know that not many schools may offer the latter but it is all right with me since I prefer the convention classroom learning. In this setting, I can learn from my teacher and at the same time exchange ideas with my classmates. This is a good way to broaden my perspective about how people view films and film making. It is also a means of motivating myself through the healthy competition found inside the class. Nevertheless, I still find it important to have some time alone to think about my ideas for potential films.
